There are 1.2 billion people around the world living on less than a dollar a day. The number of people who no longer have a place to live due to conflicts, natural disasters, or other reasons has climbed to over 20 million. While on the face of it it appears humankind has grown and developed at an astonishing rate over the last 100 years, behind the scenes the gap between the rich and poor has in fact continued to widen.
