私は利己的だ。集団や組織を好まずひとりでいることが好きだ。そんな私が映画製作の道を選んだのは、人と対話し世界とつながらざるをえない道だったからだ。サンフランシスコではヘロイン中毒者に、ミネソタでは農民に、ハワイではフラダンサーに出会った。クメールルージュの兵士とはカンボジアで、原爆の被害者とは広島と長崎で出会った。彼らは自分たちの人生について語ってくれ、私の人生に影響を与えた。私は自分を開き世界に何かを返そうという気持ちを持たざるをえなくなった。私のような利己的な人でも、世界への貢献はできるのだ。

I’m a selfish person. I don’t like groups or organizations. I prefer to be alone most of the time, but not all of the time. I became a filmmaker because it forced me to communicate with people and relate to the world. I met heroin addicts in san francisco, farmers in minnesota, hula dancers in hawaii, khmer rouge soldiers in cambodia, atomic bomb survivors in hiroshima and nagasaki. They told me their stories and touched my life. I had no choice but to open up myself and try to contribute something to our world. So even a selfish person like me can make a contribution.
