Iran earthquake

A major earthquake hit Bam, in the south-eastern province of Kerman, Iran, at 5:28 a.m. (local time) on 26 December 2003.
Approximately 30,000 people were killed, and 25,000 homes (86%) destroyed according to UN. Rescue efforts from 44 countries involving 1,600 aid workers have worked to rescue earthquake victims, provide medical treatment for the injured, protect those who were left homeless. Reconstruction assistance has also started.
