The magnitude 9.0 earthquake that struck the area off the western coast of
northern Sumatra 26 December 2004, at 7:59 am local time (00:59 GMT)
triggered tsunamis, that swept into coastal villages and seaside resorts in
more than 10 Indian Ocean coastal countries, such as Indonesia, India, Sri
Lanka, Thailand and Somalia.
Entire coastal regions were damaged and the estimated death toll has jumped
to over 150,000. There is the threat of outbursts of epidemics like
typhoid, malaria, cholera, dysentery and many other in damaged areas.
Governments worldwide are constructing international emergency aid networks
and many NGOs/NPOs have been starting aid programs at the affected
