i am a volunteer of Greenpeace@Hong Kong, here is a recent event happened to us:
22 Feb., 2003, Hong Kong - Greenpeace this morning delivered an open letter to the US Consul General demanding an explanation and apology for the actions of security staff hired to protect the USS Blue Ridge during a peaceful Greenpeace protest last Thursday on the ship's recent port visit to Hong Kong.
Four activists dressed in T-shirts with the wording ssDon't Shoot the peace messengers!(R) paraded in front of the US Consulate General. "The level of force that the security staff used was not only completely disproportionate to the threat but also highly irresponsible.(R) said Alice Yeung, Action Campaigner of Greenpeace. No one from the US Consulate would take delivery of the letter, which was also faxed, posted and e-mailed for the attention of Mr. James Keith, US Consul General.
On the night of Thursday 20th February, Greenpeace volunteers staged a peaceful protest against the possible war in Iraq at the mooring site of the USS Blue Ridge near Tsing Ma Bridge. The protest took the form of a projection of the peace sign and a ssNo War(R) message on to the bow of the USS Blue Ridge from a launch that Greenpeace hired, at a distance of approximately 70 metres. Nevertheless, during the projections a Greenpeace volunteer operating the projector had a rifle leveled at her by a crewmember on one of the private security boats hired to protect the US ship. The security guard then shouted a warning that if the volunteers didnt move away they would be shot. Greenpeace immediately informed the police of the threat and a police launch arrived shortly afterwards. The Marine Police are investigating the incident and may bring charges.
Greenpeace is an organisation based on principles of peace and non-violence, all of its actions are peaceful with safety uppermost in our minds. The Thursday night protest was no exception. Greenpeace has been taking action globally to protest the possible war in Iraq.
