On February 7, Sir Richard Branson, the chairman of the Virgin Group in UK and the former vice president of the United States, Al Gore announced the establishment of the "Virgin Earth Challenge," which will give a prize to anyone or group that develops effective measures for significantly extracting greenhouse gases from the Earth's atmosphere.
Technologies that extract significant levels of greenhouse gases that will at least have an affect for 10 years and that can be commercialized are eligible for the prize. A panel of 5 judges and an advisor, including Al Gore, will evaluate various technologies over the next 5 years, but they may announce the winner before this 5 year period is up if they find likely candidate(s). And what is more, a prize of 25 million dollars (approximately 3 billion yen) is being offered! This is the highest prize ever given to science and technology. (The Nobel Prize is worth 10 million krona = 1.4 million dollars).
Sir Branson said in his release, "By competing for this prize they will follow in the footsteps of many of history's greatest inventors and innovators. But in this case potentially save the planet. It is our hope and belief that the winner of The Virgin Earth Challenge will help to reverse the collision course our beautiful world is currently on." Wouldn't you want to take a stab at coming up with an idea that may change history?
